Elaine Anderson moved to Florence Cove twenty-one years ago, drawn to the beauty of the river. The majestic peacocks were a factor in her decision to purchase this piece of paradise. Ms. Anderson and nineteen other residents of the Cove are heartbroken over the recent trapping and removal of so many of the birds by her next-door neighbor who determined the peacocks were hindering their house from selling.
The peacocks were removed after a resident of Florence Cove who had lived there for 18 years listed their home for sale, vacated the property, and claimed they weren’t able to sell their home because of the peacocks. Yet, after research, the neighbors had no problem renting their house while they were trying to sell it, and had made prior arrangements with a trapper who intentionally lured the peacocks into their empty garage and removed them from Florence Cove. It was a deliberate act of malice.
#SaveThePeacocksofFlorenceCove is an initiative to have peafowl reclassified to be protected. There are many areas around Florida and the United States who have this same problem. “We cannot save the peacocks which have been removed from Florence Cove, but we are in hopes that we can save others”, stated Ms. Anderson. The initiative will petition to have Florence Cove designated as a protected peacock sanctuary, to preserve and protect them in the environment they have called home prior to the residents of Florence Cove.
